When speaking about Darol Anger and Mike Marshall's live performances, people often use phrases like "synergy," "breathtaking" or "space travelers."
Darol and Mike have created their own way of speaking – through their instruments. A connection and a shared repertoire that goes very deep; developed over 35 years of music-making in a wide variety of music styles. It is very rare what these two have the ability to do in concert. A way of communicating through their instruments that is nothing short of breathtaking.
"If there were ever two musicians destined to play together, it is Darol Anger and Mike Marshall. Having collaborated for over 30 years, they have something of a psychic connection when it comes to music. They share an aesthetic approach to music, drawing upon a myriad of styles from classical to jazz to rock to bluegrass to world music, and a similar sense of humor and dawged punstery. They anticipate each others' moves. In their hands, mandolin and fiddle become two voices engaged in a dialogue. ... they have a grace and comprehensive vision that unites the rests and notes of a hundred different musical whims, drawing them together into a playful and surprising presence. More than anyone besides perhaps David Grisman (and perhaps more than him), they have defined the sound of New Acoustic music." Wrath of the Grapevine Blog
"Anger and Marshall gave an object lesson in the curative powers of simple virtuosity." Austin American Statesman
For the past 30 years Mike Marshall has been at the vanguard of acoustic music as one of the world's most accomplished string instrumentalists. Mike is a master in a variety of musical styles including Bluegrass, Classical, Swing and Brazilian music. His mandolin, guitar and violin playing have taken him around the world and created some of the most provocative and engaging new acoustic music today. He has recorded and toured with some of the greatest acoustic innovators of our time including David Grisman, Tony Rice, Mark O'Connor, Stephane Grappelli, Darol Anger and Jerry Douglas. His 2 recordings on the Sony Classical label; 'Uncommon Ritual' with banjo innovator Bela Fleck and bassist Edgar Meyer, and 'Short Trip Home' with violinist Joshua Bell, mandolinist Sam Bush and Meyer were both on the Billboard Classical Music charts.
Exceptional among modern fiddlers for his versatility and depth, Darol Anger has helped drive the evolution of the contemporary string band through his involvement with numerous pathbreaking ensembles such as his Republic Of Strings, the Turtle Island String Quartet, the David Grisman Quintet, Montreux, the Duo and other ensembles. Today Darol can be heard on NPR's "Car Talk" theme every week, along with Earl Scruggs, David Grisman and Tony Rice. He has recorded and produced scores of important recordings since 1977, is a MacDowell and UCross Fellow, and has received numerous composers' residencies and grants. He is a featured soloist on dozens of recordings and motion picture soundtracks.
