 Music
Atmospheric and mesmeric, throat singing is almost too difficult
to describe in words. It must be heard to be believed. The music,
produced by resonating low sounds in the throat, creates a middle
note and a haunting, flute-like harmonic.
Chirgilchin is a group of musicians from Tuva,
a small Russian province north of Western Mongolia. Singing the
ancient folk songs in the Tuvan language, the group also plays
hand made instruments.
Igor Koshkendey is one of the best throat
singers from Tuva. His singing of six style of throat singing
includes the unique Oidupaa style, which used only two singers
- Oidupaa and Koshkendey. Igor was the winner of the Grand Prix
of International Competition of Throat Singing in 1998, winner
of the Grand Prix of International Competition in Llangollen
(England) in 2000, and the winner of the International Competition
in Kyzyl (Tuva) June 2002. Igor is a soloist with Chirgilchin.
Aldar Tamdyn, was born in the Chadaana of Tuva and now lives
in Kyzyl. He is uniquely talented on the byzaanchy and morin-hour
and won best instrumentalist at the International Folk Music
Festival in Tuva. Now Aldar is the director of the National Tuvan
Orchestra of Traditional Instruments. Aldar also is a talented
instrument maker. He made all the music instruments for Chirgilchin.
Mongoun-Ool Ondar was the winner of the 1992 Grand Prix at
age 16. He knows 6 throat singing styles and is close to inventing
his own style. He is both a member of Chirgilchin and Shu-De
and is a student of the legendary singer Oleg Kuular.
Aidysmaa Koshkendey is a female vocalist who specializes in
the Long song and plays khomus (Tuvan mouth harp), tenchik (bells)
and percussion.
